During my first year in NELA, I had the opportunity to not only visit several elementary schools in surrounding counties but completed a project that involved an indepth examination of elementary schools. Having never taught in an elementary, I found teh visits and components of the project invaluable. I have a better understanding of the of the development of students in this age group across many dimensions.
An entire semester was spent visiting middle schools in different counties and completing a project in order to understand the developmental needs of middle school students as well current programs in place in my current county. As a former middle school teacher and counselor, I was able to explore differing programs, scheduling and over structure of other middle school compared to my experience. This experience added more resources to my toolbox.
Part of my last semester of NELA was consumed with exploring high schools and understanding students developmentally at the high school level. Visiting other high schools afforded me the opportunity to view alternative perspectives on important high school topics such as scheduling, course rotation and college and career readiness to name a few.
