School executives will ensure that the school has processes and systems in place for budgeting, staffing, problem-solving, communicating expectations, and scheduling that result in organizing the work routines in the building. The school executive must be responsible for the monitoring of the school budget and the inclusion of all teachers in the budget decision so as to meet the 21st century needs of every classroom. Effectively and efficiently managing the complexity of every day life is critical for staff to be able to focus its energy on improvement.

During the summer of 2017, I took a course in grant writing. Part of the course requirement was to complete a budget for a grant proposal. |
5b. Conflict Management and Resolution: The school executive effectively and efficiently manages the complexity of human interactions so that the focus of the school can be on improved student achievement.
A significant portion of my time deals with discipline. In order for the process to move swiftly so that I may focus on other tasks throughout the day, I rely heavily on our behavior management matrix for consequences. Additionally, using the matrix helps me maintain consistency. Prior to the start of school, the administrative team met to review the matrix and update based on our current culture and discipline trends. I was responsible for ensuring that the updates were published in the handbook.

The master schedule is finalized during the summer. As part of my principal residency, I reviewed the master schedule to identify any concerns. Courses with state exams have common planning and other courses are able to plan during the intervention blocks.

As a requirement, Northern Nash High School conducts lock down drills throughout the year. In order for staff to communicate with administration, a google doc was created so teachers can share concerns or issues. After lock down drills, the administration team reviews the information and plan for improvement. As a leader, it is important to have communication protocols in place for an array of situations. Though you cannot be prepared for all unknown situations, you can be prepared for situations that have occurred in history.

5d. School Expectations for Students and Staff: The school executive develops and enforces expectations, structures, rules, and procedures for students and staff.
In both the student handbook and faculty handbook, expectations, structures and procedures are clearly articulated. Before staff and students return to school, the administrative team met to update both handbooks. Additionally, each administrator uses the handbook when speaking students about discipline and with teachers when issues arise. As a principal resident, I relied on the handbook to maintain consistency.

At the onset of my principal residency, I spent a lot of time revising and updating both the staff handbook and student/parent handbook to make certain that the handbook information matched school expectations, goals, vision and beliefs.
